Robot and Frank

Well worth 89 minutes of your day spending time with Robot & Frank...Langella
I looked up yesterday at my AA in-flight movie and saw that they were screening 'Robot & Frank.' I immediately began buttonholing my seatmates: "This is a really good movie." I had the good fortune of catching it during its August 2012 big screen debut and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We sought it out for two reasons. First, my wife and I love Frank Langella. [Pro tip: Check out the vastly underrated Starting Out In The Evening.]

Second, I'd caught Mr. Langella talking most informatively about the film - and about his career on stage and screen - in an interview with Fresh Air's Dave Davies. The best part: when asked why he chose to participate in the film, Langella told a fascinating story about getting sent the script, liking it, but feeling it didn't fully depict the challenges facing a man in his eighth decade. He said that he asked for a meeting with director Jake Schreier and writer...

Bitter-sweet family drama, character study and buddy movie all at once
I saw the movie "Robot & Frank" in the theatre here in Cincinnati in early September. It's taken quite a long time for the DVD release to get listed on Amazon, but here we are finally.

"Robot & Frank" (2012 release, 89 min.) brings the story, set in upstate NY "in the near future" of Frank (played by Frank Langella) who is an ex-con (a "cat burglar" as Frank puts it) in the latter stage of his life when his memory fails him at times. Living alone has become a challenge and one day Frank's son buys him a robot who can be a do-it-all butler for Frank. Then a strange thing happens: after initially resisting the robot as much as possible, Frank discovers he actually likes the robot's help and, even more important, its companionship. Soon thereafter, Frank concots a plan to commit one last heist, with the help of the robot. At that point we are not even half-way into the movie, and to reveal more would certainly ruin your viewing experience. You'll just have to see for yourself...

HUMANITY IN THE MACHINE
Frank Langella is an actor whose talents are rarely noted it seems. Some folks don't even know who you're talking about when his name is mentioned and that's a shame. Those of us old enough to remember will think of him as Dracula. A younger generation might consider him Nixon. The thing is he's been around turning out great performances for years and doesn't get the recognition that he deserves. His latest out on DVD proves that.

In ROBOT & FRANK Langella stars as Frank, an ex-jewel thief in the near future when things are changing as they always do. A cantankerous sort, Frank has been left by his kids to fend for himself away from family. They still try to make his life as comfortable as possible but at the same time have little to do with him. Case in point is the new item Frank's son Hunter (James Marsden) has brought to him.

To make sure that he's taken care of Hunter has just purchased a robot to be Frank's companion and caretaker. The robot has numerous...

Martha & Friends: Martha's Magnificent Egg

Sweet...My Son and I Love the Martha Cartoons
We used to watch Martha & Friends when it was on the Hallmark Channel. I had never seen the Easter or Halloween episodes, so I was delighted to see them available on DVD. The graphics are colorful and bright. This Easter episode teaches kids the importance of friendship versus winning a competition. Martha and her friends want to enter an egg decorating contest because the prize is an invitation to the White House Easter Egg Roll. I won't give away the plot, but it is a cute film, perfect for the entire family.
Martha's friends are always enthusiastic about DIY crafts, which encourages young kids to explore crafts just like Martha and her friends. The DVD includes three Martha webisodes and downloadable fun craft projects and recipes.

The Importance of Friendship versus Winning
My kids are in a super competitive phase where everything is about winning from who finished their dinner first to who ran to the park the fastest. Martha's Magnificent Egg pleasantly surprised me by opening the door for a talk about the importance of winning. And here I thought it'd just be a cute Easter Egg DVD!

I've never actually seen the show before so I was curious what it would be like. Martha has her own show for her blog, which I found to be amusing and a sign of the times! When her demonstration of creating unique Easter eggs is copied by a friend, the issue of winning and losing comes up. She wanted to help her friend but now she might lose a competition because of it.

Competition and winning are commonplace among young children so this is a great lesson in why friendship and helping others is more important than a win.

While my kids are younger than the kids in the video, they still understood the lesson. The characters would be more...

Adorable Craft Ideas and Friendly Message
The 411 by Maria & Goddess (7 year old):
We spent the past three days home bound due to the weather. We were either playing in the snow or warming up with some hot chocolate and a movie with this one being one of them.

We love Martha and her friends Kevin, Lily and Hannah,are always up to something fun in Martha's craft room. This time they are entering an egg decorating contest. Martha combines crafting and a great friendship message to makes a DVD that kids and parents will enjoy.

We especially loved the PFD files included on the DVD! Insert the DVD into your computer and find 13 pages of Easter recipes and crafts that are extremely child friendly. Goddess asked me to print her a copy so she can figure out what supplies she needs. We will start working on our crafts next week.

Black's Game

Icelandic Crime and Drug Fest that Rocks!
For such a small country Iceland doesn't half produce some talent and this is another example of what they can teach the rest of us. This is based on actual events and takes us back to the heady days of 1999, just before all the computers were going to fall over in 2000. It tells the story of Stebbi or `Psycho Stebbi' as he soon gets nicknamed (played by up and coming Thor Kristjansson `Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre'). He gets into trouble with the law and at the police station he runs into an old chum in the shape of shaven headed Toti (played by the guy with a name that rolls of the tongue - Johannes Haukur Johanesson ). Well Toti says he has a lawyer that is so great he can get him off the rap. So when Stebbi calls he says he will put him in touch for a small favour, a bit of mutual back scratching as it were.

Once the nature of said favour is made clear Stebbi starts to get cold feet, but they soon warm up again. Only then Toti gives him some advice in `self help'...

Great movie.
Priced just right and was impressed with the quality of the picture. Black's game was a real treat to watch. I would recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys an edge of your seat flick. Jamie

Not bad
Kind of a plodding/dawdling fictional "crime" movie about drug dealing in iceland. It's definitely watchable it just doesn't go anywhere. Is it worth watching? The scenery is definitely different and it's shot pretty well; probably worth a rental if you watch these kinds of movies all the time. I know the "payoff" in these movies is supposed to be when everything falls apart (the "tragic" fall) and the main character thinks about what he's done but in this movie this "payoff" isn't really handled well; it feels a bit hollow. Also: there's very little violence in this movie which is odd for this type of movie.

3 stars; no more no less. Meh is meh.

The Crackerjack

Non Stop Fun From Start To Finish
If they could capture Johnny Hines' energy and put it in a bottle, we'd be able to pack 30 hours of fun into every 24 hour day.

Hines' character is the perennial go getter; he's like the Warner Bros. Tasmanian Devil - just a blur of activity. With a grin that seemingly stretches from ear to ear, he maneuvers his way through adventures that test the limits of our imagination.

In "The Crackerjack", Johnny plays a pickle salesman who gets involved in a corrupt South American revolution, saves the day, and gets the girl by means of...well, don't ask. It basically defies description. Rest assured that this is a real crowd pleaser that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The gags are inventive and non stop. Even the subtitles which, though hardly subtle, more than make up for it with their innovation and cleverness.

The print from which this DVD derives may not be perfect, but it is much better than some of the others I have seen which have been released...

A Silent Clown Returns to the Limelight
As a long-time silent film buff, I thought I knew everything there was to know about the great comics of the silent era. I was wrong. Johnny Hines, completely unknown to me, has all the great gifts of athleticism, daring, timing, and romantic grace one associates with Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Charlie Chaplin, and adds his own considerable charisma and cocksure American enthusiasm to the mix. The plot revolves around Hines going to Florida to save his family pickle business. As he touts his new product, the stuffed pickle, he inadvertently becomes involved in a South American revolution. Silly stuff, of course, but executed with conviction and verve that had me laughing heartily. Ben Model is a well-known musician whose compositions and accompaniment enliven every silent film he's worked on. He has generously dipped into his own collection to resurrect the reputation of Hines and restore a truly funny film to the public. Thanks, Ben! Keep 'em coming.

Pickled and Preserved
I've enjoyed many films from cinema's silent era, but had never heard of Johnny Hines before this. What I found was a fun film that kept me entertained for the 67 minute run time. The plot is over the top, frankly pretty ridiculous but in a very funny way. Political intrigue, pickles (literal & figurative), revolutionaries... pretty crazy but it works in this. The comedy is incredibly well preformed with gags I hadn't seen before such as a "so long" pancake. This surprised me since I would have assumed that a film like this and a performer like Hines wouldn't have been nearly lost to the ages.

The print is a bit worn, with scratches and a few dark spots and some of the inter-titles replaced where missing but the transfer is very good and the DVD showcases the best quality you could expect from a lost and basically abandoned old film. A wonderful addition and the real reason for the release is the new score. I've attended a few silent film screenings in the past that...

Guerilla Gold Rush

cry for Colombia even harder
I saw a Frontline episode that focused on Haiti after the earthquake. I titled my review "Cry Even Harder for Haiti" because it showed that Haiti was poor, downtrodden, and corrupt before the 'quake and nothing has changed. This work says the same thing about Colombia and the little gold it has present. The film "Our Lady of the Assassins" presented Colombia as very violent and unsafe. I had a roommate whose former roommate was Colombian and he said when a man gets home from work in Colombia, he goes outside and shoots his gun in the air to let his neighbors know that they shouldn't dare rob his home while he's present. I think that awful Pablo Escobar may have been from Colombia.

If poor people could make money off of gold, rather than cocaine, then that would be a good thing. However, the government and paramilitary groups are taking over what could have helped many impoverished families. This reminded me a lot of the African issue of blood diamonds. Colombians...

Bible: Stories From the Old Testament

Great Documentary
Although it says release 2013, it seems old documentary from early 90s, some informations are old, e.g. when they take about creation of light in the first day and the sun in the 4th day and how is that a challenge for creation believers, but actually last year the scientist found that the light is the component of material, they identified the "higgs boson", or what some scientists love to called God particles, those particles make the light to become a material with a mass, so create light before sun is found to be 100% goes with the scientific facts which is missing in this documentary or never mentioned.

nice DVD
the dvd was informative, watch alongside your bible to check- some of the quotes characters used in the DVD are similar but not exact to bible.

It was a great topical story of bible stories

Well made I enjoyed the quality of the facts and film quality is superb I will recommend to any one who loves the bible stories to get one.

Diamonds Are Forever [Blu-ray]

Extras put DVD over the top
Although Diamonds Are Forever is a fairly weak entry in the James Bond series, the special edition DVD of this movie must rank among the best of all the 007 releases. The half-hour Inside Diamonds Are Forever documentary is both outstanding and informative, featuring such items as the background story behind Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd (including recent interviews with actors Bruce Glover and Putter Smith), and a fascinating revelation by Jimmy Dean, who admitted to some discomfort in portraying a thinly-disguised Howard Hughes-type character when his real life boss at the time was, in fact, Howard Hughes. The 45-minute biography of Cubby Broccoli is almost worth the price of the DVD alone, and the inclusion of four deleted scenes nicely pieces together what was originally an editing nightmare for this film, especially Plenty's mysterious appearance in Tiffany's pool. One final note: the Bond filmmakers have always prided themselves in delivering sanitized sex scenes without resorting to...

TIFFANY CASE, THATS QUITE A NICE LITTLE NOTHING YOU'RE ALMOST WEARING.....I APPROVE.
This Bond movie has it ALL. No doubt one of my favorites in the whole 007 empire. Tiffany Case is probably my favorite BOND girl, because she is no doubt the bad girl of BOND girls. The action in this movie only stops to let the clevage show, in short there is never a dull moment in this 007.
Sean Connery flirts with ALL the chicks, if he had class in the original handful of movies, well he completely did away with that in this venture. He's a wise cracker in this one, which adds a lot of wit to this. Quirky, clever dialouge all around...
"Which do yo prefer, blondes or brunettes?"
"Either, as long as the collars match the cuffs."
Then theres Plenty O'Toole (ha hah) also a very attractive little chick, even though she gets drowned somewhat early on in the film.. oh well, it left more room for Tiffany Case to run around half naked for the rest of the time.... Outstanding rump shot while she's switching the cassette tape inside the laborotary. "Showing a little more...

Diamonds Are Forever (And For Fun)
Extremely stylish James Bond film, which ushered in the "just for fun era" that didn't end (but was interrupted by For Your Eyes only) until Roger Moore's retirement in 1985. However, this one has several qualities which most of those others don't. First, Sean Connery's back and gives his most complete acting performance in a Bond film. I personally enjoy him more in this film than in any of his other Bonds. It was, for my money, his most relaxed and confident performance. And his less than perfect appearance, though shocking to some, made his portrayal of the world-weary Bond all the more appropriate. Second, the dialogue here is masterful and, for once, truly funny in an ultra-sophisticated sort of way; the witicisms are incredible clever, maybe more so than in any Bond before or since. You have to watch this one over and over just to catch all the ingenious banter. I also really enjoyed all the supporting characters performances as well. While he might have...

Same Time Every Year

A Decent Example of 80's Retro Porn...
[SAME TIME EVERY YEAR - 1981 - Directed by Fred J. Lincoln] Though it may not be considered a 'hardcore classic', this film plays to the strengths of Fred Lincoln's talent for near wall-to-wall sex scenes, energetic performances and a bevy of fine female talent. The plot is established in the first five minutes, thankfully, and then we're witness to scene after scene of what we signed on for.

With actresses/performers like Tiffany Clark, Loni Sanders (in 2 scenes), China Leigh, Lee Carroll, Holly McCall and Kathy Harcourt, among others, you're bound to find a few babes that appeal to your erotic fantasies. As far as the men are concerned, who cares? Do I care if hedgehog Ron Jeremy is in this? Not on your life; I've never seen someone as repugnant as that clown in a porn film, and my heart bleeds for the women assigned to have sex with him, but I digress. The bawdy babes and brisk sexual escapades are well worth your retro viewing buck, and that's all that matters.

~~~ Goodm 80's Porn~~~~
.....The Girls are Beautiful ,,,the guys are good too....Ron Jeremy is actually almost slender......This is the kind of Porn I like....no rubbers or shaved .....the sex is great......just very sexy.....what I was hoping to get......
Smiley
Could be the worst movie I've ever seen. Seriously.
When I first heard about this movie, I was very excited. The trailer looked scary as hell, and the premise was new and original for the slasher subgenre within horror. The mask was awesome (and still is), plus, Keith David (John Carpenter's The Thing, They Live, There's Something About Mary) was in it, how could it be bad? I was telling people about it, genuinely excited for its release. I even shelled out money to the website that the movie would premiere on, promising behind the scenes looks into the 'Making Of'. I joined their video submission contest to see if it would get into the movie. Independent movies like this, especially horror, are what really give fans things that are new and original, so I am happy to support them.
And then I saw it.
Now, this follows the fact that a week before the movie was set to premiere on VOD, the whole idea was shaken up, and AMC Theaters bought the rights to show the movie in various cities around the country, mine...
I wanted to love this
I wish I could give this movie five stars. I really do. I love the idea of a manifestation of human evil, coming alive through one of our greatest tools. I love the examination of "trolling" behavior and how it looks when people take that attitude into the real world. I love the idea of the extremes we can go through when we have the advantage of anonymity. And I love the idea of humanity being just a step in the evolution of something truly terrifying.
That being said though, the movie itself is a mess. Most of the actors are good, but the script is a jumbled mess. The dialogue is so overly-dramatic and jarring. It sounds to me like the writers spent a lot of time researching the inner-working of internet communities and personalities in a textbook, but never actually bothered to go online.
I enjoyed the reveal towards the end and thought it made for a very good ending, but the actual last couple of minutes were a little disappointing and predictable...
Smiley
I saw this for free on Amazon Prime and I thank Amazon for saving me $10. The movie is basically about a killer that appears after you write something three times on your computer on a chat site kind of like an update of Bloody Mary or Candyman. It does hold my interest but the cast sucks & it dragged on for way too long. The big reveal made me confused & the ending screamed sequel. If you have Amazon Prime then check this out for free but do not pay for this movie. It's not worth the money.
The Man with the Iron Fists (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)
Fun, Tarantino-esque movie, but overextends itself
The Man With the Iron Fists is a movie that was 'presented' (not produced) by Quentin Tarantino and directed by RZA. It centers on the story of a black blacksmith in China, who is trying to leave his hostile home village that's entrenched in between good ol' clan wars.
If you are seeking to be entertained, look no further. RZA blends the 'hip-hop samurai' type of music and feel -- prevalent in a lot of anime in recent years -- with the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-floating-around-style of fighting to create a high-flying (no pun intended) and adventurous parody of the genres with a Spaguetti Western flare. Needless to say, visually this movie is great in many respects.
However, beyond that, the movie suffers from more than a few noticeable stumbling points. The first being dialogue. Not only is the writing over-simplified, but the fact that some of the Chinese characters have Oriental-English accents while others speak perfectly clear English is something that...
if you love 70's kung fu movies...
fantastic movie! i saw a lot of very unique and fun kung fu ideas that could only come from a true movie fan such as the rza! there is a brass statue of a man that is in many movies as a training dummy for qi (chi) blocking attacks. in this movie there is the statue and a man with skin that can become brass at will, it links up toward the end in such a cool way i was blown away. i imagine the rza back in the 70's thinking "what if someone had to fight the qi training statue? then they would be really f*&%ed!"
i could see where he deliberately paid homage to old kung fu films with some of the camera work, hair and acting styles, this kind of thing might look odd too someone who hasn't seen older kung fu movies as some of it seems corny or stilted (which is how those old movies are, something fans love!). but even so, they would get over it every time one of the AMAZING battles started.
at first the rap music came off as out of place. this is coming from a wu tang...
good kung-fu movie reminded me of the old ones
good movie for a martial arts film. would have like to seen more fighting styles and the other clans in this movie.
Teddy Bear
4.5 stars... excellent family drama
I am a long-time fan of the Film Movement DVD library of foreign and indie movies, and earlier this year I finally entered a subscription to the monthly releases. This is the most recent (August, 2012) release.
"Teddy Bear" (2011 release from Denmark; 96 min.) brings the story of Dennis, a 38 yr. professional body-builder looking for the right girl. Any girl for that matter who will just take a liking to him. The movie opens with Dennis on a date with a girl, and it's just a terrible date. Soon after we learn that Dennis still lives with his mom, who disapproves of any forays by Dennis in the dating scene (Dennis had to lie about even being that bad date). Mom and Dennis attend a wedding ceremony of Mom's brother with a girl from Thailand whom he met there and then moved her to Denmark. Dennis, desparate at this point, agrees to take a vacation to Thailand (without Mom knowing, of course). All of this develops in the first 30 min. of the movie. To give more away from the...
Incredibly Boring Movie
Dennis is not the most interesting character ever to lead a movie. He may be the worst. He has no personality, rarely smiles, is horrible at human interaction, and is under the thumb of his nasty mum.. So what does he do? He goes to Pattaya, Thailand, where he proves to be horrible at picking up girls. The only really interesting interaction he has is with a hunky Thai bodybuilder. But, after a false start, he finds the woman he wants and brings her home. What the attraction is is never shown. Predictable, mummy is unhappy, and, as a viewer, I was too. We never find out what makes Dennis tick. Or why someone wanted to make such a boring film.
Great acting, touching film ... slow ...
Dennis (Kim Kold) is a bodybuilder in his late thirties who still lives at home with his domineering mother, Ingrid (Elsebeth Steentoft). Despite his size, Dennis is meek and shy, and desperately lonely. So when a relative brings home a "mail-order bride" from Thailand, Dennis is motivated to make his own pilgrimage. And Dennis does find love, even if not quite where he expected.
Until "Teddy Bear", I don't think I'd ever seen a serious, respectful portrayal of a bodybuilder in a non-documentary film. Dennis is an extremely sympathetic character, and Kold, the real-life 2006 Danish National Bodybuilding Champion, is wonderful: amazingly stoic yet capable of conveying joy or heartbreak with just subtle shifts in his facial expression. Dennis' happiness is infectious in the few scenes that take place in the gym, the only place he's truly comfortable. And you root for Dennis to find the same fulfillment in the rest of his life.
But I still found "Teddy Bear"...
Octopussy [Blu-ray]
Octopussy should get more respect - answering the critics of a fun movie
Octopussy has had many criticisms leveled at it since it slipped into cinema's in 1983. One complaint is that there are simply too many villains - is the crazed Gen. Orlov the main villain or the suave Kamal Khan? Another objection postulates that its choice of India as a location sends Bond into a pure fantasy land with a depiction of tribal princes, mysterious islands populated entirely of impossibly beautiful women and bungling local thugs. Still more point to its inappropriate rather juvenile schoolboy humor, from Bond's Tarzan yell to our heroes ogling over a young woman secretary's bust as a reason why the movie fails.
These objections are perfectly legitimate, but one has to feel that the movies detractors were missing the point. Bond is a fantasy figure who in the past has battled armies inside bases hidden inside hollowed out volcano's (in 1967's YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE) and shot into space to save the world from poisoned orchids globes (in 1979's MOONRAKER). Bond belongs in...
Bond's On An Island Of Beautiful Women in "Octopussy"
"Octopussy" is the thirteenth entry of the James Bond series produced by Cubby Broccoli and it marks the sixth appearance of Roger Moore as the British secret agent. John Glen returns to the series to make his second of four directorial efforts in this film. The title of this film is taken from an Ian Fleming short story which is actually told by the title character to James Bond in the film. Only one part of the film, the auction, is based on Fleming's work, in this case the short story "Property of a Lady". The rest of the screenplay was conceived and written by longtime Bond associates, Richard Maibaum and Michael Wilson.
The story begins with the discovery of a fake Fabrege Easter egg in East Berlin. Its genuine counterpart is about to be auctioned off in London and M, head of MI6, is worried that this is part of a Soviet operation to raise hard currency. Bond is assigned to attend the auction and report what he can see. What starts out as a simple assignment...
Roger May Look Tired, but this Movie is Fun
"Octopussy" was the thirteenth "official" James Bond film, and Roger Moore's sixth. While Roger is looking a bit ragged, this movie is plotted well and has some of the classiest Bond movie characters. "Octopussy" was released twenty years after the release of Dr. No, well into establishing the James Bond series as the longest running movie series in history. 1983 was also the only year in which two "serious" James Bond movies were released, with "Never Say Never Again," starring Sean Connery, released shortly after this film. Two Bond films were also released in 1967; "You Only Live Twice" and the comedy "Casino Royale," with an all-star cast that included Peter Sellers, David Niven and numerous Bond movie actors, including Ursula Andress and Caroline Munro.
When agent 009 turns up stabbed with a valuable jeweled egg, James Bond is on the case. His investigation leads him to India, where he learns that Kamal Khan is involved in a number of activities, some of them...
The Sessions
A Bold And Entertaining Movie Featuring Two Of The Year's Best Performances
After making a splash at this year's Sundance film festival, the provocatively themed "The Sessions" has created a fair amount of buzz both for its subject matter and for its performances. Based on the true story of Mark O'Brien, the movie tackles a topic that might make some uncomfortable--sex, specifically sex and the disabled. In an era where any amount of violence and gore is perfectly acceptable, I still don't understand why it is verboten for American movies to deal with sexual issues in a frank and adult manner. So I appreciate that writer/director Ben Lewin made "The Sessions" with a matter-of-fact boldness uncommon in today's movies. The movie is frank, explicit, and both emotionally and physically revealing. Instead of feeling unnecessarily prurient, however, the movie is surprisingly life affirming. It is sensitive about its topic, but also quite humorous. I was afraid the film might be a little too clinical, depressing or dispassionate but it is, instead, eminently...
"But the truth is, we're just human."
The Sessions is an extraordinary little indie film based on an even more extraordinary true story. In 1988, Mark O'Brien, a thirty-eight year old poet, journalist and advocate for the disabled living in Berkeley, California, decided to lose his virginity. This may not sound very extraordinary unless you know that O'Brien, severely afflicted by polio as a child, had spent most of his life in an iron lung and was unable to move any part of his body below the neck.
O'Brien's decision was prompted as a result of research he was doing for an article on the sex lives of disabled people. After interviewing a number of disabled people, and seeing how many of them were in fact enjoying an active and rewarding sex life in spite of their disabilities, O'Brien began to consider his own sex life, or rather, his complete lack of one, and how he might go about changing that. The issue was further complicated for O'Brien by the fact that he was a devout Catholic and what he was...
A Burdensome Virginity
How do you lose your virginity if you have been confined to an iron lung most of your life? A couple of years ago, I had some lively discussions on this topic with one of my JayFlix friends, a health-care professional who was attending a young quadriplegic. Now this film-festival favorite addresses the question, only this man isn't paralyzed with no physical sensations, instead he is a polio survivor confined to an iron lung since childhood. Furthermore, he is a witty, well-educated and frustrated adult.
Based on the real-life story of Mark O'Brien (1949-1999), a Berkeley poet and journalist, he was the first severely disabled student to graduate from college, earning a bachelor's degree in 1982, and acceptance to a post graduate program. His inspiring story has been told once before in a documentary film, "Breathing Lessons," directed by Jessica Yu. It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short in 1997. This version is written and directed by the acclaimed Ben Lewin,...
Serena - An Adult Fairytale
Serena-An Adult Fairytale
If you like classic porn you may like this one. Serena my not have been the hottist of the early porn star but she new how to take care of a tool. I think it was worth the price.
Very Tame, Very Lame Porn Flick from 1980
[SERENA - AN ADULT FAIRY TALE - 1980] Director Fred Lincoln (along with his woman/wife and porn actress Tiffany Clark) made quite a few solid porn flicks in the late 70's, but this one's weak all around. I guess it helps if you find Serena attractive, but I've always considered her a third tier tramp with decent oral skills. Nothing more. And none of the other actresses are all that memorable, except China Leigh, as there weren't many Asian porn actresses during the 70's and 80's (unlike today, where they're incredibly abundant).
The fairy tale plot wears thin immediately, and remember these folks aren't actors, they're performers, so you're just killing time until the next sex scene, again none all that memorable. You'll probably fast-forward through half the film. It's nice that Synapse is releasing some retro American erotica to go along with their Nikkatsu Asian softcore flicks from the late 70's/ early 80's and the German 'Schoolgirl Report' series from the early to...
Not sure why Amazon lists this as "The Bully Project", but we are talking indeed about the documentary "Bully", whose initial R rating by the MPAA Caused such an outcry (more on that later).
"Bully" (90 min.) is the self-explanatory title of this documentary, directed by Lee Hirsch (who he himself was a victim of bullying when growing up, reason for wanting to make this film). The movie basically follows 5 students in schools in Georgia, Iowa, Texas, Mississippi and Oklahoma as they deal with bullying in an almost daily basis, some with tragic results. There is a lot of footage from school buses, which appears to be ground zero for bullying. I assume Hirsch was able to mount some cameras in the bus unbeknowst to the kids. What we see is sometimes shocking. In the case of 12 yr. old Alex, the bullying becomes so violent that in the middle of the movie, we are informed that the film producers were so concerned with Alex's safety that they decided to share the school bus...
Everyone should see it, but not everyone will
My mom recently gave me a bag of papers, report cards and mementos from my school days. She meant it to be a nice thing for me to have in adulthood to remember my school days. People who want me to put the past behind me seem to also be the same people who won't let me forget it. I had to stuff that bag in the closet. I can't look at it without crying. Why were they so mean to me? Why was I such a bad person? Why did they hate me so much? I graduated high school in 1989, and the bullying I endured still hurts.
If you're an adult survivor of the kind of heinous treatment the kids in this movie endure, it may trigger a PTSD episode. If it never happened to you, you will be absolutely stunned at what goes on. They don't sugar-coat anything. Some of the footage is raw and disturbing. These kids know that the cameras are there; they've been recorded since before they were born. They know they are being watched, and they still behave like animals. It makes you really wonder what...
Powerful and Disturbing
BULLY is a powerful, disturbing documentary feature from director Lee Hirsch that sparked a national movement that rallied people to stand up to school bullying, hate and intolerance.
This is a difficult film to watch, as the camera captures the emotionally painful lives of five families whose children were victims of school bullying. Two of the kids committed suicide, while another in a desperate effort to get her fellow students to leave her alone, threatened then with a gun and wound up in jail.
However, what is truly distressing about BULLY is the "kids will be kids" and "there's not really much that we can do" attitude of the idiotic school administrators and local police who seem to prefer to ignore the issue.
Perhaps if officials like these had addressed the bullying problems in their school, a tragedy like Columbine would not have occurred.
BULLY is not "entertainment," but it is a film that every kid, parent and school official...
Sexual Tension: Volatile
Very sexy shorts compilation from Argentina
Argentinean writer/directors Marco Berger and Marcelo Monaco present six short films, each one featuring young men in somewhat stereotypical (classic gay-porn dream scenarios) but highly erotic situations. The storylines include a teen boy who feels a sexual rush from a hunky tattoo artist, a young man encountering a friend's sexy cousin, a guy who suggests role-playing with his buddy who is having problems convincing a girl to have sex, a male nurse gives a sensual spongebath to a guy with two broken arms, a man on holiday with his wife finds himself naked in the shower with the innkeeper, and two hunky bodybuilders get touchy-feely with each other following a workout. Each highly contrived scenario creates a high degree of suspense, as to whether "it" will happen, before the screen fades to black.
If you're looking for a plot or great acting, pass this one by. But if you are in the mood for an erotic buffet of hot, young Latino men, brief full nudity and - as the title...
sexual Tension
I had trouble watching this DVD as it was an American zone code.
I also thought it was a film, but it was 4 short stories.
It was OK though.
The Sexual Tension in this Movie will have your motor running for hours........
This is one of the most sexually charged movies that I have seen in a long time that is built around the emotions and actions of sexual tension and flirtation. This movie has no sex, but it doesn't need it because what makes this movie special is that it thrives on "visual edging"......charging up your sexual motor and bringing you to the edge and keeping you dangling there......My personal favorites in this sexually charged lust fest is (1) The Cousin, (2) The workout partners, and (3) The two friends who talk about sex, and (4) The Tattoo artist......If you like to be visually edged with just the right amount of nudity.....This move is for you...I have watched this movie dozens of times and will probably wear it out and have to buy another......
Attention to packaging
No worries on content but production of the DVD, camera work, audio recording , label printing
seems unprofessional. Also, container of DVD not good enough and, as result, during delivery, the DVD has released
itself from non-holding(!) centre clip and became useless.
Early product's was having 2 clips in centre catchment nest, new ones reflects cheaper alternatives.
Waiting in the Summer: Complete Collection
High school slice-of-life romance with a sci-fi twist.
This was a fairly enjoyable show. At its core, this is a series about a couple of high school kids, centered around main character Kaito Kirishima, who attempt to shoot a film together during their summer break. Thrown into the mix is an alien girl, Ichika Takatsuki (who passes off as a "foreign exchange student"), who traveled to Earth in an attempt to find a location on Earth she remembers vividly from a picture.
Its largely slice-of-life, meaning it follows the characters during their everyday dealings with each other. There are sci-fi things thrown in as well, since the main heroine is an alien. However, the bread and butter of this series is the romantic parts. Almost every character is in love with another one, but they are afraid to confess either because they're afraid of rejection and causing awkwardness within the group. Otherwise they know that their love interest likes someone else, and either bear the burden alone, or try to hook them up together, knowing full...
Wow...I can't believe how much I liked this.
Honestly, I was surprised by how much I liked this series. I would have given it 5 stars. However, I'm pulling a move that I usually HATE when reviewers do, sorry Sentai Filmworks. This really needs a Blu-Ray release. Hence I deducted a star. There are 1080 masters available for the series and there's plenty of Japanese BD releases. Granted this is a Showgate release, and I don't know if they aren't providing 1080 masters, or if Sentai Filmworks just isn't investing in a BD release.
The reason why I'm upset about this, is that I love resolution on a beautiful series, which this is. The composition and color used are just great. The story as previously put, is about a summer romance with a twist. Honestly, the twist intertwines into a beautiful love story between multiple characters, which really makes them come alive. One which makes me pine for my youth and those summers filled with crushes, and adventures.
When put into the climax of the series, it has one of the...
A very entertaining summer story
From the creator of Onegai Teacher and Twins, Kaito is a enthusiastic film maker, using an old 8mm camera and taking some home movies. However things change when a flash of light crashes into the lake he is near and all he remembers is a hand reaching for him. The next day he meets with his classmates and they decide to make a indie movie over the summer break, where they are joined by two uperclassmen - Rinon and Itchika, the new transfer student. But on the way home he sees Itchika fishing by the river and he finds out that she has no where to go. He invites her to stay at his house for the day and after her bath he collapses. His sister and childhood friend (who has a crush on him) finds them in the foyer, him unconcious and her pretty much naked. But little do they know at the time the new transfer student is actually an alien who has come to earth to find a memory left behind. And this starts the story of a group of friends who start off making a movie, but end up learning...
Trap
Great Indie/Intense Performances
A much needed return to the independent films we used to see in the 90s. Three great performances by the leads. The young black guy reminded me of a young Sam Jackson. The chemistry with the girl is extremely believable. I loved the fact that it's so character based, but when it hits the fan. It hits the fan. No spoilers though. Just watch it!
Good indie drama
From 28DAYSLATERANALYSIS
The press release calls Trap "the newest thriller from director Jason Horton" (Trap). Yet, the film is mostly a dramatic feature with thriller elements. The story succintly involves a kidnapping of young vixen, Tennessee (Ashton Blanchard) who has developed a devilish charm at a very early age. One of the kidnappers falls for the captive and here things twist and turn, as characters Franklin (Alonzo F. Jones) and Walt (Allen Perada) have a falling out. Despite what the press says, this is primarily a drama.
One small criticism of execution. The first scene involving Tori (Annemarie Pazmino) could have been cut right at the shotgun misfire to build tension. This scene's resolution could have been interweaved into the the second act that moves along at a slow burn. With the beginning and middle looked at, how about the ending?
This is where Horton's intelligence shines, as the characters, who have been built and introduced, come...
don't bother
the movie is extremely boring, every scene is predictable - the Plot is predictable right from the Beginning and the outcome. Don't waste your time like I did.
Argo (Blu-ray/DVD Combo+UltraViolet Digital Copy)
4.5 stars... "This is the BEST bad idea that we have"
"Argo" (2012 release; 120 min.) bring the story, based on true events but fictionalized for Hollywood purposes, of how CIA operative Tony Mendez (played by Ben Affleck) goes to Iran to help rescue 6 Americans who are holed up in the Canadian Ambassador's residence ever since Iranian fanatics violently took over the US Embassy compound. In order to get the 6 Americans out of Iran, Mendez proposes that they pose as Canadian film makers, who are in Iran scouting for appropriate locations to film Argo, a Star Wars-like adventure. When the various options and alternatives (foreign teachers? agriculture specialists? no, film makers!) are presented to US Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, he looks incredulous, but when reassured about the various options available that "they are all bad ideas. but this is the BEST bad idea we have", Vance blesses the mission. In order to lend credibility to the idea that he is involved with this fake movie, Mendez and his Hollywood connections set up a fake...
ARGO: Declassified Extended Edition - List of New Special Features & Items included
Most people, myself included, really enjoyed "Argo". If you don't already own the film, this Extended Edition might be the way to go. But if you already own the original blu-ray release, then is it worth an upgrade? Well, hopefully the details below will help you make a decision.
Included on the blu-rays:
- Theatrical Edition of the movie
- Extended Edition of the movie (an extra 10 minutes added to the film)
- 3 New Special Features + all the special features from the previous blu-ray release
Included in the box set:
- 40-page book premium featuring behind the scenes photos, production notes, bios and more
- Argo One-Sheet Poster (you know they are going to fold it to fit it in the box, so it will have creases right down the middle)
- Map of Tehran movie locations (14" x 20")
- Reproduction of Tony Mendez's CIA ID card
So if you enjoyed the movie, then you might want to consider picking this up. I'm interested in...
Tense, intelligent, and even quite funny
Ben Affleck continues to prove himself one of Hollywood'd best, most intelligent 'mainstream' film-makers.
In Argo he manages to combine nail-biting suspense created with a minimum of violence or standard movie
action, a sharp, dark sense of humor about the weirdness of both espionage and Hollywood, and makes a film
about getting American hostages released from Iran without giving in to jingoism.
Affleck even takes the time at the beginning of the film to put the Iranian revolution into a larger context of prior American
involvement and manipulation in Iran's politics, thus making the Iranians' hostage taking horribly wrong, but also somewhat
human and understandable.
The story itself is a doozey, and definitely fits into the `you'd never believe it if it weren't true' mold. Using a fake movie as a
cover-up for a long- shot rescue operation sounds like a bad episode of `Mission Impossible' (or even `Get Smart'). But here
it...
Sinister [Blu-ray]
Scared the crap out of me
Horror movies these days don't really scare people. The only horror movie to really creep someone out more recently is the
first Paranormal Activity. But that's now been done to death. All horror movies now a days are either remakes or go for shock and become what is the newer term, "torture porn", until now. Sinister came along just in time for all of us to get our
Halloween chills and scared the crap out of America. I have seen a lot of horror. I even go for those really bad SyFy B-rated
ones for laughs. The newer horror doesn't scare because it's predictable and instead it disgusts me. The over use of torture and gore that have nothing to do with the plot. Sinister however does something different. Ethan Hawke plays the character of a true crime writer desperate to live his glory days, almost at the cost of his family. And he plays it well. The violence that actually has to do with the plot was creatively filmed. And because the story was unique and not a rehash,...
'Sinister' delivers the chills
Director Scott Derrickson's latest entry into the horror genre, the aptly titled `Sinister', is an instant classic.
Egomaniacal true-crime novelist, Ellison Oswalt, moves his wife and two kids into the house where an unsettling murder involving a family of five has recently taken place. He plans to write about the incident and the missing child, who was apparently spared and kidnapped by the killer, hoping that he can solve the mystery without the help of the local authorities.
As he stores boxes in the attic, he finds several reels of Super 8 film and a projector. Each film contains increasingly graphic and macabre footage of a family being murdered. Upon further inspection, Ellison discovers that a pale, hollow-eyed figure can be seen lurking in the background in each one of the home movies. A pattern begins to emerge, as Ellison becomes consumed with the dark secrets that lie within the films. Further investigation confirms that there are demonic forces at...
Best Horror To Come To The Theater In Years!!!
This movie I have to say, is one of the best horror film's I have seen in theaters since "Orphan" (2009). I don't get scared easily and the movie brought chills down my spine!!! The dialogue in the film was good, the acting was much better than expected (I am a huge fan of Ethan Hawk from Day Breakers, the cinematography was perfect, the story definitely carried out smoothly, and the idea behind the movie and having a descent original supernatural climax was really what kept this movie on the edge of your seat! A lot of horror films in the past that are about supernatural things but end up having a human climax is disappointing to me in most movies (cry wolf, sorority row, etc). The ending really caught me off guard, and ended in a way that makes u feel cold and creeped out. This movie makes you think. I don't know how anyone wouldn't find this film creepy, or sick to say the least and if you don't think so then something is seriously wrong with you. Amazing film! Wish there was an...
Tiger & Bunny Set 1
I've been waiting for this!
In the future, there is an evolved breed of humans called "Next" with special powers. Sternbild City has found a good way to put these powers to use - "Hero TV" a real reality tv show where superheroes are sponsored and ranked, with a "King of Heroes", a title that goes to the hero with the most points each year. Wild Tiger is a hero on the show whose popularity is on the decline, while his destruction bill is on the rise. Given one last chance at heroism, Wild Tiger is forced to partner up with the newest hero to join the show, the young and charismatic Barnaby Brooks Jr.
This show was so much fun. The concept behind Hero TV, while flawed, is brilliant. I've always wondered about who covers the bill when some superhero destroys millions of dollars worth of property. I am probably weird. But it is still a fun concept even if you don't wonder about that sort of thing. The characters were all distinct and the relationships very well developed. It was fun having a main...
Tiger & Bunney GO!
this is a great series, i have long awaited its release here in the USA. the series revolves around heros fighting to protect people. these heros are NEXTS(similar concept done by the armored core video games), anyway these nexts have special abilities but only become a "hero" when they have a sponsor, our hero tiger is long in the tooth apparently and down on his luck until a new sponsor takes him and partners him with Barnaby whom he calls "BUNNY" due to the pink points on his suit. they quickly become the only duo team to fight evil and uphold justice and this makes for great ratings (as the heros are watched on a tv show by the populous and win points according to deed, most heros have different abilities but tiger & bunny have the same ability weirdly enough.
It's finally out!
Been waiting for the official release for this in America! Tiger & Bunny is truly one of the best shows ever created. It's highly original for an anime and anyone who's a fan of animation should watch it. The storytelling is fast pace and westernized while still maintaining the feel we all love in anime. Characters are diverse and actually look different from eachother. The art direction is practically flawless, and the japanese voice cast is top notch. Haven't given the english cast a shot but for those of you who are looking for it it's on there too. The blu ray has great updates in the some of the scenes that were lacking in the original release (Which you can see for free on Hulu) and everything is very crisp and bright. Overall a pretty good buy.
Cons? (Not related to Amazon or the series itself)
Well my main complaint is the packaging. While this seems like a total nitpick it's important to consider if North America wants to do a better job of marketing...
Atlas Shrugged II: The Strike [Blu-ray]
Better than Part 1
This is Part 2 of the Atlas Shrugged series; and it's a powerful continuation of Atlas Shrugged Part 1. I viewed this when it was released into theatres.
This part depicts the United States' further decline into the depths of economic despair. And it shows how increasing government oppression causes the decline to accelerate, even as more and more producers and innovators disappear from industry.
The acting is good to very good. Samantha Mathis brings a more dynamic range of acting skills to Dagny Taggert. Jason Beghe is first rate in his role as Hank Rearden, and Esai Morales is exceptional in his role as Francisco d'Anconia. In fact, I must say that these three are much better suited to their roles, especially at this point in the story. For example, Hank Readen's speech before the court was much more forceful, I think, than if it were rendered by Grant Bowler.
The camera work, computer graphics, scripting, and cinematography are all first...
Plan 2 from Galt's Gulch
Ayn Rand must be rolling over in her grave. As readers of Atlas Shrugged know, one of Ayn Rand's sacred words is "competence": she accords it the reverence that a Jesuit reserves for the word "chastity". Her villains aren't merely evil: they're morons who'd have trouble running an elevator. So it's a cruel irony that Atlas Shrugged is being so thoroughly botched.
The origins of this disaster go back some 20 years. In 1992, producer John Aglialoro paid $1 million for an 18-year option on the film rights to Atlas Shrugged. The outlook seemed promising, with big names like Charlize Theron and Anne Hathaway being considered for the lead role. But first a contract with Turner Network Television fell through; then another with Lions Gate Entertainment. Meanwhile the years were ticking by.
Suddenly, it was 2010 with rights on Atlas due to expire on June 15 of that year. Aglialoro made the fateful decision to press on. The screenplay was still being written in...
True to Our Times
I went to see Atlas Shrugged, Part 2, at one of my local theaters the day of its first showing. The film is a pretty accurate reflection of the direction our Nation is taking. Little wonder that the movie makes Hollywood critics and D.C. politicians uncomfortable. The film reveals what they really are and what they are about. The characters are believable, the acting is supurb, and the plot ties into current events very well. I'm looking forward to Part 3.
La Salsa Cubana
A note about subtitles
A note from the producers: La Salsa Cubana is a Spanish language film with English subtitles. The subtitles are hard-coded and sit a bit low on the screen because they were formatted for cinema. This usually isn't a problem, but we've heard of cases where a DVD player and/or TV will crop the film at the bottom, and in some cases this can crop off the subtitles. Try changing your DVD player settings to "letterbox" to show the full 16X9 image and prevent cropping. If all else fails, you can play the DVD on your computer. Not ideal, but it works!
Inspiring and truthful. A great film showing the real Cuba. A must-see!,
We, Chris & Jessica from [...], teach Cuban-style Salsa in Santa Cruz, California. We saw the film in San Francisco at the 5th Salsa Rueda Festival and then again in Santa Cruz, California in March 2013. We studied dance in Cuba and we experienced how the people live there. So, we can say that we can relate.
We were very much impressed about this film. The film captures you in many ways. The film shows the true life and dreams of the people. The story line was great introducing the people with interviews, leading to the competition and at the end showing what is happening after the climax. Not the typical Hollywood ending but real life, inspiring and truthful! We loved the interviews, the cinematography. Impressive photography from different angels during the Rueda dances. Great selection of music. This is not Hollywood but a great and true independent film! A must see!
Great movie!
This will satisfy anyone who loves dance, documentaries, travel films or a great story!
Wow- this film has something for everyone. I was mesmerized by the photography, the in-depth and patient filming- really allowing the dancers to tell their stories- and the emotional connection that draws the viewers into the film. Really, if you like travel, or like to dance, or just like great documentaries, this film should be on your must-watch list.
Somebody Else Is On The Moon
can you say bootleg?
definetely contains some cool information and images. it is pretty amateurish. sound sucks thru the whole thing. but was worth it just to hear some of the information towards the end. wouldnt recommend for somebody who hasnt read george leonards book , or seen any other cover up videos first.
Two historic presentations
These are two of the most important presentations ever put on DVD !! First you get a new version of the UFO press conference at the National Press Club. By new version I mean that this one was organized by James Fox and Leslie Kean. You get many of the witnesses the Dr. Greer and Mr. Basset had in 2001 and 2007 (I believe) with a couple of new ones thrown in - most of whom are from other countries. These are people who are first hand witnesses to the reality of unexplained aircraft and often the active cover-up that is on going.
Next is Richard Hoagland's presentation about the moon and the structures and other artifacts that NASA doesn't want you to know are there !! Mr. Hoagland touches on Dark Mission, and the Monuments of Mars, but concentrates on the Moon. The audio is a little rough, but not bad enough to keep you from being amazed at the information.
Whether you are new to this material or not, this is massively important for everyone. There has never...
Blind Spot
this sleeper is still the best film on Peak Oil
Blind Spot was directed by this easy-going hard-working team of adolfo and amanda who patiently put together the first peak oil film to seriously discuss "overshoot" and "carrying capacity" - two of the most important concepts any world citizen should know. william catton's monumental book overshoot finally makes it's first appearance in a film as william catton, and later in the film, mathematics professor albert bartlett show how ignoring population and simple exponential math will, unchecked, destroy western civilization and alarmingly soon. oil is a one-time resource. use once and it's gone. millions of years at the right heat and pressure to make and it will be too expensive to extract by 2100 because no one wanted to save it for grandchildren or use it sparingly. 2005 was probably the year of peak oil; that means that half of all the oil in history (the EASY to get half) is now gone. thus the end of cheap energy. without fossil fuels the world could support one billion, maybe...
It's Do or Die Time.
In this film you'll find that are core causes to the crisis were in. There is also a deeper story of how humanity turned from partnership relations to organizations of dominator hierarchies. About five thousand years ago we started by these hierarchical structures, and when you organize by those structures, you have a few people at the top & a lot of people on the bottom. There is a HUGE disparity between them. This creates an enormous competition for positions of power, and that dynamic becomes imperative
to maintain the system, to appropiate more & more resources to maintain that struture of dominance, to maintain the militarty forces, to maintain order, to maintain the byzantium bureaucracy, to maintain the priesthoods that develope the ideology & religion that legitimize the KINGS over the serfs. This has played out for over five thousand years and evolved through the city/states, then the nation/states, to the current corporate/states.
Some believe they will move...
Chilling!
Everyone should probably see this movie and then start thinking of ways we can start to fix things now while there is still time. This is basic History/Science/Physics not some conspiracy theory and we need to start acting accordingly. "Adapt or perish, now as ever, is Nature's inexorable imperative." H.G Wells. I also reccomend Nova: Solar Energy-Saved by the Sun it isn't so gloom and doom as Blind Spot, although alot of people might need the slap in the face that Blind Spot provides.
Sarah Squirrel's Great Adventure
Wonderful video!
I ordered Sarah Squirrel's Great Adventure as a gift for a friend who just had a baby but also has a two year old at home. I watched it and loved it's simplicity and nature video style. It is real video of live animals not cartoon format and it had enough other animals and firetrucks,etc to make it appealing to any young child. I have ordered more as gifts for some teachers I know and to have on hand for other friend's grandchildren...highly recommend it if you are an enjoyer of squirrels! My dogs even were glued watching which was entertaining in itself!!
we love sarah squirrel!
We were looking for a kids video that had actual animals in it rather than dancing, singing cartoons. Our two year old loves it. he loves seeing all the different animals and the buses and cars. I'm so glad I found this.
Bandwagon
Purple Rain was personal, man, and that went quadruple platinum!
First off, this is one of my favorite films of all time. I can watch it over and over and over and never get bored of it. I discovered it a year ish ago randomly on Netflix. I was so disappointed when I realized I couldn't buy it on DVD. A few days ago, something possessed me to look for a DVD copy for the hundreth time. I was surprised and excited when I found out I could now buy it on DVD! Anyway, I gave this 4 stars, because I feel it's a bit overpriced for what you get. The packaging and physical DVD itself are kind of chintzy, but when you play it, it is very good quality and everything. It also kind of annoyed me for some reason that there was no DVD menu of any kind, the movie just started playing right when you put it in.
A very telling look into what its like being in a band
I happen to really like this movie. Though I haven't gotten around to ordering the DVD yet, I have it recorded on VHS. I gave it 4 stars based on the fact that the previous review said there is no menu which is a bit of a downer. But the movie is fantastic. It really impacted me in college and I certainly related to it. Anyone who's been in a band can probably relate to this story. Definitely worth checking out.
Edit: I forgot to add, the music is awesome in this movie. It's all original and very catchy. I still have the soundtrack.
Snow (Institutional Use) (PAL)
Great film, short but expected for this independent.
You have to realize this is an independent project. There isn't any WB or MGM money bankrolling it
Having said that, there are no executives trying to "reach" every audience. It is a great film, I would of loved it in highschool or in an ecology class. I supported it when it was trying to come out. Acting is top notch. As an MD/MBA in healthcare management, it is a great history lesson because we still use the basic methods Snow started back at the pump. If you're not an avid lower of evidence based medicine, need not worry, the acting is more than sufficient. It left me as a viewer questioning the background of each character, there was a lot of mystery to the background of the characters. I feel that this film with more $$$ would of haven been great. It is just hard to please an audience who believes Abe Lincoln was a vampire slayer.
Amazing Public Health History!
I spent my career in public health so this short movie was great. I think it would be a great teaching tool for science classes at the middle to high school level--hopefully it will give some students the nudge to study epidemiology later. Made me proud to have chosen the career path that I did. A great book that goes further into detail about this subject and appeared to me to be the outline for this movie is The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic--and How it Changed Sciences, Cities, and the Modern World by Steven Johnson.
"Snow" - campy - melodramatic
A very melodramatic and to some extent shallow "take" on the life of Snow. Pales in comparison to The Ghost Map by Johnson. Some of the scenes evoke a feeling for Victorian London... but that can also be found in Mayhew... or in Polanski's Oliver Twist.
Dedd Brothers
Total Laugh Riot
From the beginning through the end, I found myself involved in the characters and was highly entertained. Great effort guys! Looking forward to more works from all involved.
So funnnny!!!
this is such a funny movie i watched it with all my friends and family were just laughing our butts off. love the actors so cute <3!!!
A LOL Film
A well made darkish type comedy. Went into it with low expectations and was quite surprised with the outcome. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the film, for the most part it kept you entertained but had a few lagging moments. I can easily see this film becoming a cult classic especially amongst the "Stoner" audiences. Nothing like kicking back a few cold ones with friends while watching an absolutely outrageous, off the wall comedy like this. I highly recommend it to anyone who's looking to get a good laugh!
Undefeated
Outstanding on so many levels
"Undefeated" (110 min.) brings the story of the North Memphis Manassas High School football team's 2009 season. The football team's history is one of losing, losing, losing, until a few years before that a volunteer coach named Bill Courtney steps up and coaches and wills these young men, all of them underprivileged from this inner-city part of Memphis, to greater things. "Coach Bill", as he is referred to by his players, tries to instill discipline, character, and the "team first" concept to them, and what a struggle it is.
The title of this documentary is quite curious, as the team does NOT go undefeated, nor do these young men go undefeated through life. The movie focuses primarily on three of the team's players, including a young man who returns to school as a junior after having served a 15 month jail sentence as a juvenile (it is never made clear what he did to deserve that sentence). Another of those kids the movie focuses on gets injured early into the season and we...
Building Character Through Football: A Journey To Adulthood Starts On The Field
2011's Academy Award winning feature for Best Documentary, "Undefeated" tells the true story of a high school football team in Memphis that defied the odds to challenge other squads with much greater resources and support. Told largely through one exciting season, we see the team evolve as a powerhouse with the tireless assistance of a volunteer coach named Bill Courtney. Building the team from the ground up, Courtney sees football as a way to build character with many of his troubled teens. And indeed, these kids are growing up in a world where crime and poverty claim victims all around them. You probably know the format of the inspiring sports documentary. There have certainly been plenty of them. "Undefeated" is, at the same time, exactly what you might expect but also a great deal more. Football becomes a metaphor for something much larger. And if you think you know the outcome due to the film's title, it doesn't necessarily refer to a winning season...
Stunning
I have never been so thoroughly and completely in a movie's vice grip. There's a scene at the end that is so gripping, so profound, that it's almost unbearable to watch. Incredibly stirring. Wow.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower [Blu-ray]
Adolescence Has Not Changed
I am 74 years old. The world is different now; there are more risks and more choices than when I was 15, but this movie reminded me of what it felt like to be 15 and 16 in 1954 and 1955. In those days homework was accompanied by radio with Rock and Roll music thanks to Alan Fried, Ranger hockey against Maurice Richard, and Gene Shepard,the best story teller of all time. Most of us had after school jobs which gave us enough spending money to begin making choices independent of our parents, and every day we left home and entered the world alone, with very little confidence but with the hope that everything was going to work out. Watching Charlie going through his day, observing the antics of his friends and trying to make sense of it all, brought tears to my eyes. The beauty of the movie is that it captures the universal experience of adolescence, and fortunately, as difficult as the experience may be, just like Charlie, most of us make it through.
"And in this moment I swear, we are infinite."
Every now and then, you come across a film where everything was done just right. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of those films. Directed by Stephen Chbosky, who wrote the screenplay as well as the popular young-adult novel of the same name from which it was adapted, The Perks of Being a Wallflower seems to hit every note just right, capturing all of the tumult and the extreme highs and lows of adolescence as experienced by a group of friends in high school in Pittsburgh back in the early 1990's.
(*** Note: this review contains what some people feel to be spoilers, so if you're sensitive to such things, please stop reading now and just take my word that this is really well-done, enjoyable film and is well worth going out of your way to find and see. ***)
The film begins with 14-year-old Charlie (Logan Lerman) writing a letter to an anonymous "Dear Friend" about his nervousness about starting his first year in high school. He writes because he doesn't feel...
An underrated movie worthy of awards.
When I think of this movie, I think about perfection. Everything about it is spot on. The acting, the directing, the music, the story, everything. Had their not been so much focus on Argo, Lincoln, Zero Dark, and Les Mis, this movie would have won many awards.
The story keeps you guessing and is anything but predictable. There are several things hidden from you as the plot unfolds and right away the mind gets busy trying to figure everything out.
You feel very involved when watching Charlie's freshman year in high school progress. You root for him and are riding on his emotions, but you are also trying to understand who exactly he is.
Without spoiling anything, the basis goes like this: Charlie's best friend shot himself the summer before Charlie goes to high school. As a result, he enters high school as a loner and outcast, and has to try to get through the year with as little resistance as he can. Luckily he starts to make friends and you are brought...
The Thieves (2012)
Terrific Movie, Great Cast, and Jaw Droping Action...
Get over the subtitle issue and watch this movie. The cast delivers great performances. The story's complexity unfolds wonderfully. I was thoroughly entertained by the stunts and action sequences. Many top notch movies have incredible stunts and action sequences but this movie takes the sequences to a significantly higher level... Watch is and let me know what you think...
Honor Among THIEVES
Caper flicks have been done before. For the record, the French have had a few solid outings. I've yet to see anything significant from the Russians. The Brits can pull them off with surprising aplomb, as can many other production houses throughout the United Kingdom. I would have to say, though, that the United States has put out the lion's share of the truly memorable ones. I couldn't say why that is exactly; maybe it's that I haven't seen enough foreign imports, or maybe it's just that U.S. production companies have a singular knack for taping into that exceptional mix of action and comedic charm needed to pull it off so winningly.
If THE THIEVES is any indication, then South Korea may be set to give the Americans a good run for their money.
Not an Ocean's Eleven remake, less jovial, more gritty
I just watched this movie over the weekend with the wife. I was happy that the movie actually strayed from my Ocean's 11 assumptions going into it. I love Ocean's 11 mind you, but was looking for something that would be more original. This movie was that, definitely some twists on who the villains and good guys are in this movie, as you're watching, you can see where everyone's motivations are and see the situations in different lights.
'The Euro-Sleaze Collection (THE SINFUL DWARF/THE SISTER OF URSULA/HANNA D: THE GIRL FROM VONDEL PARK)
EURO-SLEAZE TO THE MAX
This Severin box set really delivers. All 3 movies are Euro-trash classicks. Packed with sex, violence, and lots of nudity.Skip the pricey XXX version of Sinful Dwarf and get this instead. Much better value for about the same price. The XXX VERSION of Sinful Dwarf is a few minutes longer with XXX Inserts from body doubles. Not really worth the hefty price tag in my opinion. I love this box set and you will too.
Very good movies from the past
You better be aware that all three movies are rated R. so there is not much to see in this movies, but the picture is wonderful in all three, and the acting is great. and beautiful locations, very good movies to watch with your 60 years old wife.
Jack's Gift
Jack's Gift is a really well put together film with some great acting! Adam Dykstra's writing and direction are great and there are performances here that need to be seen by movie-goers everywhere. Entertaining, Thoughtful and Deep.
A Gift
What a great movie, the story was well written and I could relate to the main character. Would recommend it to family and friends - hope the director makes more films.
